Painting Tour

December 08, 2007 By: putu Category: Bali Tour

My client is a painter. He likes painting landscape. After 40 minutes drive from Ubud on the scenic route, he finally decides to stop at outside of Batunya Village. The curvy and hilly small road that look like roller coaster amongst the vegetable valley of Bali, attract his artistic eye. Interesting lines of mountain and saturated blue sky with dramatic cloud above the terraced valley make the composition just perfect.

We park the car side of the road and set the painting equipment. Soon he is busy transforming the beautiful nature to his drawing paper using watercolor. Meanwhile, I am busy clicking the shutter button of my camera. I point my camera to him, to the landscape and to the people passing by. Some people stop to see what we are doing. Good Sir!’ Some of them commenting after seeing his drawing. We spent about one and half hours here. He finishes one painting here.

We drive on that roller coaster road until we reach Baturiti main road. We drive passing Bedugul and make a stop again at a small café overlooking the twin lake of Buyan and Tamblingan. We are now in the other side of the line of the mountain we saw before from Batunya. After having lunch and enough resting, we drive down to Tamblingan lake.

The quietness of Lake Tamblingan is inspiring. Quietness refreshes our mind, so the mind not anymore loaded with many unnecessary thought. The content of the mind become minimalist. Minimalist picture can please the eye.

The calm water of the lake seems to teach us to slow down our rush and stress life. Slowing down this wheel of life give us time to think a better direction. With a better direction, we can reach our goal faster, not just wondering around fast. A picture should show the meaning in the simplest way.

The wood looks of unpainted ‘pedau’ / canoe gives rustic feel. It brings us to the old days where things seem orthodox. Orthodox life cost less as less saturated color paint but it look more fancy, expensive.

I take few pictures of men chasing fish. He hit the water hear and there to lead the fish to his net and trap them in. After that I just sit there waiting until my client finishes several frames of drawing. After two hours, he finally washes his brushes and pack. He join me sit there and do nothing for another half an hour. It is beautiful to do nothing sometime and just paint those beatiful scenes in our mind.

On the way back we made a stop at the famous Bratan Lake. Very impressive lighting for picture once we get there.
